DxO FilmPack: 18 years of science dedicated to applying the most rigorous process for profiling and characterizing analog films, resulting in incredibly authentic renderings.
In an effort to safeguard the technical heritage of analog photography, DxO searched for the last surviving copies of film rolls before they disappeared. The result was a collection of more than 80 legendary analog film stocks representing the photographic industry of the 20th century. Next, photos of a variety of different scenes were captured, both in the laboratory using test charts and in real-life situations, using dozens of carefully preserved analog films. Each film’s response to camera settings and shooting conditions was carefully recorded. As a result, the DNA of each analog film stock has been preserved so that DxO FilmPack accurately reproduces their behavior.
Reference images of a wide variety of scenes were captured, both in the laboratory with test charts and in real-life situations, using dozens of carefully preserved analog films. The response of each film to different camera settings and shooting conditions was carefully recorded. As a result, the DNA of each analog film stock was preserved so that DxO FilmPack can accurately reproduce their behavior.
Uniform areas were used to determine the natural grain of the film and model it to reflect changes in the appearance of the grain according to the film’s dynamic range.
The result is a thorough calibration of every characteristic of the various film types, and the renderings have been tested on standardized scenes to confirm that the digital version is an accurate reproduction of the analog film. The conversion of RAW files into analog renderings is a process that also uses DxO’s camera modules.
With these modules, DxO FilmPack seamlessly adapts the style of the film to the attributes of the camera used to take the RAW images.
